Ramsbottom United deservedly progressed to the next round of the Integro League Cup with a comprehensive victory against Stalybridge in a rearranged game after the original encounter was abandoned 3 weeks earlier.

Integro League Cup Round 1

The Rams made the ideal start on 7 minutes when a long throw fell to Eddie Moran on the edge of the penalty area before the midfielder unleashed a powerful low shot into the corner of the net to give the home side an early advantage and register Moran’s first goal in 2 years.

The hosts began the contest on the front foot with Sam Heathcote again showing his versatility by playing as a centre forward and showing some excellent touches whilst offering the Rams a focal point for their attacks.

Stalybridge didn’t offer too much in the way of an attacking threat until home keeper Danny Taberner rushed from his goal before losing his footing but the danger was cleared by the home defence before a Celtic attacker could pounce.

Indeed it was the Rams that looked likely to increase their lead in the first quarter of the contest as Heathcote had a couple of headed chances which narrowly missed the target against opponents sitting 19th in the league above the home outfit.

A second goal did arrive for Ramsbottom on 37 minutes when a goal kick from Taberner was superbly controlled by Ben Richardson who powered into the Stalybridge penalty box before drilling the ball towards the far post and despite a vain attempt from the sliding Killock the ball found its way past Celtic keeper Slinn and the Rams lead was doubled.

The home side could have added to their advantage when a superb turn and shot from Heathcote brought a fine save from Slinn and as the first half came to a conclusion the Rams were two goals in front and was no more than their performance had deserved.

Both teams re-emerged unchanged for the second period as Stalybridge looked to change the complexion of the game but it was the home side that began more positively with Richardson firing over a free kick shortly after the restart. This would be the last action for the concussed midfielder before being replaced by Jerome Wright on 56 minutes.

The Rams remained in control of the match with the Stalybridge forward line unable to penetrate the excellent home defence with Brad Roscoe at his commanding best alongside the impressive Thompson with full backs Stott and Brownhill giving little encouragement to the visiting wide players.

A second change for the home side saw Adam Kay making his first appearance in a Rams shirt this season replacing Daniels on 66 minutes as the hosts midfield prompted with Alex Meaney and Moran in fine form.

The match was over as a contest with 20 minutes remaining when the hosts scored their third goal of the evening when a strong run from Jerome Wright took him past Cowley before finding the corner of the Stalybridge net with a superbly placed shot to register his tenth goal of the season in all competitions.

As the game entered the last ten minutes former Ramsbottom player Neville brought two superb saves out of  Taberner with a couple of well struck efforts from distance as Stalybridge registered their first attempts on goal in the match as the Rams kept their clean sheet intact.

The referee brought proceedings to a conclusion with the Rams emphatically progressing to the second round of the League Cup and the reward of a home match against Hyde United. For the second time in a week Ramsbottom showed their potential by defeating a side from a league above them after an impressive victory against Shaw Lane 7 days earlier.

With free entrance to the HWRS on Tuesday night coupled with an excellent team performance from the Rams it is hoped that many in attendance may make a return for future Ramsbottom United matches.
