Ramsbottom United are delighted to announce the capture of Chorley goalkeeper Sam Ashton.

The 31-year-old experienced stopper started his career at Bolton before a five-year spell at FC United of Manchester.  He then spent a period at Skelmersdale before arriving at Victory Park via Southport.  At Chorley, he was an ever present in the side that got promoted to the Conference North, but a serious knee injury meant he sat out the majority of the 16/17 season.  After a full recovery he spent two games at Kendal Town over Christmas to regain his match fitness and now arrives at the Riverside in time for Saturday’s derby at Colne.

The Bolton based keeper is a great capture for the Rams and Mark Fell has moved quickly following injury to Charlie Albinson last weekend.

Fell commented, “Originally we spoke to Sam well before Christmas but we needed to plug the gap until he was back to full fitness.  Charlie’s loan signing was ideal but with that cut short we needed to bring Sam in earlier – our thanks go to Kendal for allowing his early release.

“Sam is a top goalkeeper and he’s already a good fit for the club.  Charlie has returned to Blackburn, he’s got a bright future in the game and I know he’s enjoyed his time here, albeit shorted than expected.”

The Rams head to Colne this weekend for a Lancashire derby.
