Lee Donafee got off to a winning start as Rammy manager on Saturday after a 2-0 home win against Bury AFC.
The new manager expressed his shock, but also joy at being promoted from the assistant manager role ahead of the new season.
“I was surprised, to be honest, but I was delighted as well to represent this club.”, insisted Donafee.
“Historically, a good club, who have had good managers and it’s a tough lead for me to follow in when you look at the manager’s who have been here before me.
“After working under Chris Willcock, it was a privilege to take the job and I’m absolutely made up to be asked to take the job.”
Rammy ensured the boss started with a victory thanks to goals from Jamie Rainford and Morgan Moreland.
Saturday was the fourth win of pre-season so far for the Rams as preparations continue ahead of the new campaign and Donafee was pleased with the result and the effort shown by every player.
“For a friendly, you want to apply yourself and how you want to play,” admitted Donafee taking charge of what was the Rams fifth test so far this pre-season.
“The lads haven’t played much football in the last 18-months so these friendlies come in handy for giving the lads match fitness.
“I thought it was a good result, I asked the lads to put everything in and I thought we were a bit shaky at times and Ollie Martin kept us in it in the first half with some brilliant saves.
“There was some outstanding performances individually, but collectively as a team, I couldn’t have asked for anymore and I thought every one of them down to a man, and the subs who came on were brilliant.”
Donafee was also keen to point out how the squad will be even stronger once experienced players’ such as Tom Kennedy and Jamie Rother become available again.
On the return of key players, Donafee insisted, “That’s only a bonus isn’t it, there’s a few lads there who have been part of the process since I became assistant manager.”
“They are going to add to the squad and we are only going to get better as we get fitter and these lads will come in and add more quality to the first eleven and the squad in general.
